Team N’zuri dominates Charnaud’s 57-floor race to the top

Climbing 1 194 stairs in full gear, Krugersdorp’s elite firefighters dominated the podium during Charnaud’s Race to the Top.

Chosen as part of just 50 firefighters nationwide, Team N’zuri represented Krugersdorp with pride as they raced up Sandton’s tallest building during Charnaud’s 50-year celebration on December 6.

Six team members, Maithamako Moswete, Johannah Belali, Ontiretse Pule, Vincent Naude, Finny Motlatse and Manie Gouws, took on the challenge at the Leonardo Hotel, climbing all 57 floors and 1 194 stairs of the 243-metre-tall building.

According to coach Manie, completing the climb in full firefighting gear pushed them to their limits.

“Tackling so many floors and stairs with full firefighting gear is not easy. It was hot, with no breeze to cool us down. The higher you go, the harder it gets – that’s when experience and positive thoughts help you,” he explained.

Manie added that Krugersdorp’s landscape gave the team a natural training advantage. With plenty of hills nearby, they regularly ran in full equipment, and they were fortunate to have trained at the Leonardo occasionally, allowing them to prepare for the conditions.

“We’ll definitely take the opportunity again if we get the chance. So far, three of our members have indicated they want to compete at the World Firefighters Games in Saudi Arabia next year, where they’ll face two similar stair-climbing events – one in gear and one in sportswear,” Manie added.

The highlight for Manie was the team’s performance. Team N’zuri won both the men’s and women’s categories:

• Women: Maithamako Moswete – 19:30
• Men: Manie Gouws – 13:36

“Seeing all 50 firefighters at the top, in good spirits and sharing their experiences – easier for some than others – was one of the highlights,” Manie said.

He added that being chosen by Charnaud to participate in the first Race to the Top, especially as part of their organising team, was an honour.

“It was hard work, but we’re grateful everything went smoothly on the day. All glory to the Lord for His mercy,” he concluded.
