Noordheuwel learner lands African silver

The Krugersdorp karateka adds a continental silver medal to his record as he targets international success in India.

Hoërskool Noordheuwel learner Brendan Engelbrecht did his community proud after winning a silver medal at the African Karate Championships in Algeria recently.

Brendan competed in the Kumite male junior Under 61kg division, winning four fights before securing second place. According to the competition’s website, over 500 athletes from 31 countries competed across Cadet, Junior, U21, Senior, and Para Karate categories spanning 55 medal events. South Africa sent a squad of 49 athletes, six from Morgan Moss Karate International, where Brendan trains.

Brendan confirmed this was his fourth attempt at the tournament and his first medal. Following his success, he is preparing for the World Goju-Ryu Championships in India from October 5 to 10.
