Pretoriuskop Rest Camp is the master when it comes to classical safari camps, paying tribute to the Voortrekker era when travellers looked for a place to rest on their journey from Lydenburg to Delagoa Bay. The camp is named after a nearby hill where Voortrekker Willem Pretorius, a member of the expedition crew led by Carl Trichardt, is buried.
Pretoriuskop Rest Camp may be the oldest camp in the Kruger but sits in one of the Kruger’s prime game viewing areas and offers a range of self catering accommodation options to suit the needs of families, couples, and solo explorers alike. These include campsites, huts, bungalows, family cottages, and guesthouses. The huts are positioned in a circular pattern around the camp and are an all time favourite for many who visit, offering an authentic African look and a true feeling of community.
The camp has everything one would need during a stay in the bushveld – a restaurant, cafeteria, grocery shop, laundromat, petrol station, and a natural rock pool.
Complementing the rustic feel of the camp is an array of safari activities that promise a thrilling bushveld adventure. Guests have the choice of heading out into the park in their own vehicle or booking guided game drives and bush walks, camp walks, overnight wilderness walks, 4×4 adventure trails, and bush breakfasts or braais out in the big five country.
The Kruger has a high concentration of wildlife and several roads to explore, affording many opportunities to sight the famous big five and other incredible animals. The wildlife around Pretoriuskop Rest Camp is great, with sightings of small herds of antelope, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, endangered wild dog, and elephant who love to gather the loop roads around the camp. A visit to the nearby Mestel Dam will offer up-close views of hippo, whilst the Shitlhave Dam often sees reedbuck visit for a drink of water. The Pretoriuskop region is one of the best bird watching areas in the Kruger National Park; with incredible sightings of the Pennant Winged nightjar, Black Bellied korhaan, and Red Collared widow.
