Spotting Martial Eagles in the Kruger

The martial, verreaux’s and African-crowned eagles are regarded to be the “Big Three Eagles” in the Kruger.

When it comes to bird watching in South Africa, the Kruger National Park is one of the top favorites. There are over 500 species of birds recorded in the park, including fifteen of South Africa’s 17 eagle species. The martial, verreaux’s and African-crowned eagles are regarded to be the “Big Three Eagles” in the Kruger but the Martial Eagle is the most commonly seen throughout the park.

Martial eagles are the largest in Africa, with a wingspan of up to 2.6 meters. They are one of the world’s most powerful raptors and have an aggressive hunting technique. A martial eagle is said to be able to kill and eat an antelope weighing over 30 kilograms.

There are an estimated 256 resident pairs living in Kruger with many seen soaring through the sky during the summer months when smaller birds like the red-billed queleas are nesting. Martial eagles can travel distances of up to 100 square kilometres a day in search of food. Their favorite meal choice is the water monitor.

Best areas in the Kruger for Martial Eagle Sightings

Martial eagles thrive in the Kruger because of the abundant food supply and vegetation that is favorable to breeding. They are generally found in the savannah and thornbush areas of the Kruger.

The area surrounding Lower Sabie has several riverine trees and a knob thorn savannah which attracts plenty of bird species, particularly martial eagles. Because of the abundant water supply, birds are generally seen around the river banks and waterholes.

Pafuri in northern Kruger is well-known for its walking safaris and Big 6 bird watching. One is likely to see birds like the Tropical Boubou, Southern Ground-Hornbill and Variable Sunbird. Boasting a tropical riverine forest, Pafuri is a great destination to spot Martial Eagles.

Martial eagles are also particularly fond of the Eastern Grasslands so driving along the H10 road which connects Lower Sabie to Tshokwane should give you incredible sightings of these raptors.

Another popular spot for seeing martial eagles is along the S112 road where it nears the H3 Road to Skukuza.

The Singita Lebombo Concession is renowned for offering incredible sightings of African fish eagles, martial eagles and the tawny eagles who have taken up residence in the area. These eagles are generally seen throughout the year.
