VIDEO: Not even the sky is the limit for hip hop artist

It all started with a cell phone recording and now, almost a decade later, for the award winning DatBoiFly 99's, the world is his oyster.

Solomon Mlungu, also known by many as DatBoiFly 99, a young upcoming 23-year-old hip hop artist hailing from Kagiso in Mogale City, is an artist with big dreams.

Having completed his matric in 2018 at the Madiba Comprehensive School, he started recording his music using his cell phone. He later started to record in the studio as a means to take his craft more seriously, “Because it saved me from the streets, from violence and drugs,” he said.

After dropping his first studio project in 2016, he kept pushing until late November in 2018.

“I got the chance to open up for the well-known artist Gigi Lamayne at De’Side,” Solomon said. Gaining experience from producing his own sound in 2019 and improving his song writing skills opened a window of possibilities for the hip hop artist, as he was able to create different genres.

“I collaborated with artists across the border like Nigeria and Angola and even from the USA and North Korea,” he reveals, “and I’ve been in the South African Music Awards 28 (SAMA) 28,” he said. On 6 November 2021, Solomon won the best hip hop artist award at the Mogale City Awards which was held at The Diner in Monument.

With all these accolades Solomon said his goal is to be a role model to the upcoming generation in his community.

“Some of us come from small families where there is not much support and guidance. I want everyone out there to visualise greatness and become what they believe in and not be discouraged by their circumstances etc. You can make it, it doesn’t matter where you come from.”

Though the rising star has not dropped a full project yet, he has released singles however, he intends to compose a project titled Ghetto Trapstar, “It will be my first official project as a whole,” he said, “I haven’t set a date as yet but I will announce it soon”.

His single Jabula, which he released on 2 September 2021 is already sitting with just over 3 000 views on YouTube, click below to see the DatBoiFly 99’s Jabula music video.
