Luan shines yet again

Tzaneen’s Luan Steenkamp has raised the Tzaneen flag high once again when he won the 2021 Chrome Open held at Chrome Golf Club in Steelpoort over the weekend.

The champion golfer has won three consecutive tournaments and five total tournaments this year.

He told the Herald that he is excited about his latest victory.

“I am very pleased and obviously in a good place with my game at the moment.

“I have worked quite hard on the mental part of my game and it is paying off now.

“Keeping calm and patient is very important in a golf tournament. “I give all glory to God for the talent he gave me,” he said.

Talking about the upcoming tournament, Luan said he is well prepared for the finals.

“I am also looking forward to representing Limpopo in the Premier IPT for the first time in ten years next year at Koro Creek Golf Estate.

I took a break from golf, that’s why I did not represent our province in recent times,” he said.

The two-day tournament was also organised by Limpopo Golf Union.

“After round 1 I was in third place on 3 over par and two shots behind the leaders.

Sunday turned out to be a good day as I played a round of 5 under par (67).

“My overall score was 2 under par (-2)for the tournament and I secured the victory with three shots,” Luan told the Herald at the time.

Luan said that while on the golf course, he is motivated by the love of the game and he strives to enjoy every round. He has been playing golf for the Limpopo Golf Union for more than ten years now, and the February game was his first Limpopo Closed victory.

“I started playing golf when I was four-years-old.

“My grandfather bought a set of ladies clubs and shortened the shafts to fit my height.

“At the age of 14 I started to take the game more seriously and at the age of 16 I earned my Junior Springbok colours,” he said.

Luan said his role model is Tiger Woods because of his unbelievable passion and skill.

Even though he has played golf for ten years he still participates as an amateur.

“My highlight as an amateur was earning my green jacket in December 2009.

“I represented South Africa against England and Canada.

After a great triangular tournament South Africa lifted the trophy,” he said.

When he is not on the golf course, he enjoys being outdoors and also loves waterskiing and hunting.

His father Leon Steenkamp said he is proud of his son’s achievements.
