Lowveld Academy learners lend a hand at HESC
A merit trip to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre saw learners cleaning rhino enclosures, feeding cheetahs and helping with conservation work.
HOEDSPRUIT – A group of Lowveld Academy learners traded their school books for a day of hard work, wildlife encounters and conservation activities during a merit trip to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) on Friday, October 16.
The educational outing was more than just a reward for the learners’ achievements. It provided an opportunity for them to give back to the environment while gaining firsthand experience of the dedication required to care for some of South Africa’s most treasured wildlife species.
Armed with enthusiasm and a willingness to get their hands dirty, the learners took part in various activities aimed at supporting the centre’s daily operations and conservation efforts.

Among their responsibilities was cleaning the rhinos’ boma, ensuring the animals had a clean and well-maintained environment. The learners also had the exciting opportunity to assist with feeding the cheetahs, an experience that offered valuable insight into the care and management of these remarkable predators.
Their contribution extended beyond animal care as they participated in bush clearing to help maintain the centre’s grounds.

Despite the physically demanding nature of some of the tasks, the learners demonstrated teamwork, determination and a commendable spirit of volunteerism throughout the day.
Tilana Harding of Lowveld Academy highlighted the importance of exposing learners to experiences that encourage responsibility, compassion and environmental awareness.
The visit reinforced the message that education extends beyond classroom walls and that young people have an important role to play in protecting the country’s natural heritage.
