Credit card scammers caught on camera (video)

Super Spar owner Lex Hollmann has shared video footage showing how credit card scammers go about their crimes in Malelane, Mpumalanga.

Hollmann said about six of these alleged scammers had been observed at one time – two inside the store and four in two getaway cars with false number plates, Lowvelder reported.

The two cars identified by Hollmann on Youtube was said to be a red VW Polo and a white VW Golf.

One number plate was said to be registered to a white Toyota.

“We want these people off the street, or at least not in our town,” said Hollmann.

Last month, the SA Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) said losses due to credit card fraud had increased by 23% from R366 million in 2013 to R453.9 million in 2014.

The biggest contributor to the increase was said to be false applications fraud, which saw an increase from R6.2 million in 2013 to R78.3 million in 2014, Sabric CEO Kalyani Pillay said in a statement.

“Of all fraud perpetrated on cards acquired through false applications, 88% of the transactions occurred in South Africa,” she said.

“Sabric has found that criminals misuse the online application channels provided by banks by using false details to open multiple credit card accounts. Consequently, they then obtain legitimate cards and PINs.”
