Absa and ZZ2 support Sekgopo learners with bicycles

A total of 175 learners from Mameriri Secondary School in Sekgopo received bicycles to improve access to education and reduce travel challenges.

TZANEEN – A total of 175 learners from Mameriri Secondary School in Sekgopo have received bicycles through a community partnership aimed at improving access to education and making daily travel to school safer and more reliable.

Initiative supports rural education access

The bicycle handover forms part of an ongoing initiative supported by Absa Group and ZZ2, which has already distributed 541 bicycles within the Sekgopo community.

Organisers say the programme is helping to remove transport barriers that many learners face, particularly those who travel long distances to attend school.

Bicycles improve attendance and punctuality

For many learners, the bicycles are expected to significantly reduce travel time while improving punctuality and school attendance.

Community leaders involved in the initiative said they have already witnessed the positive impact bicycles can have when distributed widely within rural communities.

“We have seen firsthand that when enough bicycles reach a community, real change begins to happen,” organisers said during the handover event.

They explained that easier access to schools and other opportunities allows learners to focus more on their education without the daily burden of long and exhausting walks.

Partnerships drive community impact

The initiative also highlights the growing role of partnerships between businesses and communities in addressing challenges faced by learners in rural areas.

According to the organisers, a bicycle represents more than just transport.

“A bicycle creates access, independence, and opportunity,” they said.

The programme has been praised for empowering learners while also promoting safer travel, especially for children who previously had to walk long distances on busy roads or through isolated areas.

Support for learners and future opportunities

Teachers and community members welcomed the latest bicycle distribution, saying it will contribute positively to academic performance and learner wellbeing

The support from Absa Group as a donor and ZZ2 as a community champion continues to play a vital role in expanding the initiative across the area.

Organisers thanked all stakeholders involved in the partnership for their continued commitment to improving the lives of young people through practical and sustainable support.

Programme aims for long-term change

As more bicycles reach learners in the region, community members hope the initiative will continue opening doors to education, opportunity, and a brighter future for children in rural communities.

The project remains a strong example of how collaborative efforts can create lasting impact and help ensure that distance no longer stands in the way of learning and success.
