Fruit growers are appealing to the government to assist them access new markets.
The appeal was made during the visit by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to ZZ2 and Westfalia as part of Food Security Month activities.
Giving a presentation during the visit, Claus Lippert, the Chief Executive Officer of Hans Merensky Holdings which owns Westfalia Fruit said members of the South African Subtropical Growers Association (Subtrop) really need the government to come on board, in assisting them access new markets.
“If we can get new market access, we will be able to create more job opportunities and guarantee food security,” said Lippert.
The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana who could not make the trip, said in a statement that the month of October has been adopted as Food Security month.
“The intention is to heighten public awareness of poverty, malnutrition and food insecurity,” he said
He said the visit to Subtrop is in line with government’s goal to create a strong network for producers of all sizes to access markets thereby enhancing their businesses and contributing towards food security and to our country’s economy.
Subtrop manages the affairs of the avocados, litchi, macadamia and mango growers associations.
