The strike by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality workers over salary disparities has been suspended pending the outcome of negotiations.

This after a tasks team made up of the South African Municipal Workers Union representatives, management and political leaders was formed to address workers’ demands.

The workers, mostly members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) downed tools on Monday demanding that pay disparities in the municipality be addressed as a matter of urgency.

They went on a rampage burning tyres at the main entrance of the municipal building and overthrowing rubbish bins in town, leaving the streets littered with garbage.

On Tuesday the striking workers continued their destructive behavior by attempting to disrupt water and electricity supplies to town and the surrounding areas, prompting enraged residents to describe them as hooligans engaged in acts of terrorism reminiscent of the past.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala confirmed that workers have suspended the strike to give the task team a chance to negotiate a solution to the salary disparity dispute.
