Mthembu’s shooting suspects in court

Three men suspected of being behind the shooting of former ANC member of parliament, Jackson Mthembu appeared in the Naphuno Magistrate’s Court on charges possession of suspected stolen goods on Wednesday.

The suspects, Edward Kgapane Phakula (49), Solly Maenetja (30) and Sipho Mohale (26), all from the Maake area, were arrested on Monday following Mthembu’s shooting on Sunday night.

The former ANC spokesperson, was shot while drawing money from an ATM in Witbank.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said they received a tip-off and arrested three men who were found in possession of one laptop, 30 cellphones, 28 bank cards and one card cloning device.

Magistrate Nkensani Moila remanded the three in police custody pending further investigations and to give them a chance to get legal representative of their choice after declining an offer for Legal Aid appointed lawyers.

Their case was postponed to October 28, for formal bail application.

Meanwhile, Mohlala said the three suspects have not been linked to the shooting of Mthembu. “We are still investigating ,” said Mohlala.
