Modjadji’s Muni strikers attack resident
Dylan van der Spuy, a Modjadjiskloof electrician, who tried to reconnect the town's electricity supply after striking Municipal workers disconnected it, was attacked by disgruntled workers on Tuesday.
By the time The Herald arrived on the scene, the disgruntled workers and angry residents were already in conversation.
An impromptu meeting was taking place, with Municipal workers explaining their position to angry residents, who in turn were demanding the immediate reconnection of power.
According to municipal workers of the Greater Letaba Municipality, who chose to remain nameless, their unhappiness is due to non-payment of workers by the Municipality. When they try to talk to Management, they are ignored and they now have to resort to power cuts in order to be heard.
Modjadjiskloof’s electricity went off at around 12pm Monday. Residents jumped in and fixed the problem themselves but shortly after being fixed, the power went off again and by Tuesday it was still off.
On Tuesday, Dylan van der Spuy, a local electrician, tried to reconnect the electricity but angry striking workers rushed him. Bricks were thrown at him and he was only saved by more residents appearing on the scene who managed to calm matters down.
As one angry Municipal workers put it:”We hired management because of their qualifications yet they are always away on courses. Stop going on courses and do your work.” At the time of going to press The Herald still wasn’t able to get any reply from Greater Letaba Municipality, as nobody was answering their phones. Residents are welcome to keep an eye on The Herald’s website for more information on this story as it developes.
