The aim of the event was to honour the best performing matriculants of 2015 within the GTM. Students representing all 10 circuits under GTM were present, the circuits are: Xihoko, Mafarana, Nkowankowa, Motupa, Tzaneen, Mawa, Shiluvana, Nwanedzi and Khujwana. Mayor Dikeledi Josephine Mmetle stressed the importance of education and how it can better one’s life. “I am here to congratulate principals who motivated their learners to work harder. Some of these students didn’t have computer laboratories in their schools,they faced domestic challenges and some of them learnt chemistry from textbooks,” said Mmetle. She further stressed that she expects every teacher to be in class teaching and every student in class learning. Mmetle congratulated Tzaneen circuit for being the top achiever for achieving 95.0% and Nkowankowa circuit for best improved for achieving 85.84 which is a 6.84% improvement from last year’s 92.3%. Tzaneen circuit was therefore given R10 000 for their achievement, they also produced the top learner in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Adrea Devenish from Merensky High School who obtained 92.3%.
Top learners from each circuit received R5000 for registration at a higher institution of their choice. Khanyisa Makhubele from Zivuko Secondary School scored six distinctions with a 100% pass in Mathematics and will enroll at the University of Cape Town for a course in Medicine. Ndzalama Mhlongo from St George College scored himself seven distinctions and will also enroll at the University of Cape Town to further his studies in Business Science. He urged pupils to work hard and maintain pace.”I wouldn’t have made it without God” said Ndzalama.
Petanenge Secondary from Nkowankowa Circuit improved this year by 30%, becoming the most improved school for achieving 93.75% from 68.6% last year. Two schools from Nkowankowa Circuit, St Georges and Meridian achieved 100%. The learners who passed with flying colours were recognized in the presence of their school principals, circuit managers and parents. The Mayor appreciated their hard work and support from their parents and schools before they go to varsity.
