Chaos in SRC elections

Last week Maake FET College was in a chaotic situation after the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections were disrupted, which caused chaos in and outside the college's premises.

The chaos started last Wednesday when the programme of canvassing for the elections were disrupted by students. The Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC)
alleges that the disruptions were done by the South African Student Congress (SASCO) which is currently represented by the ANC. It is alleged that SASCO disrupted the canvassing because they fear that EFFSC will win the elections.
The EFFSC further said that they are confident that they will win because last year they helped students who did not qualify to write the exams to be able to write.
They said they did so because the school has a policy that states that students have to first qualify to write the exams and approximately 50% of the students did not qualify to write, now they believe they have a larger following than their counterpart.
SASCO said they need to get a statement from the school’s management as to why they have suspended Piet Mokgolobotho as the SRC chairperson candidate, who was chosen by SASCO.
They confidently said “no Mokgolobotho no vote’. Management refused to comment on the issue.
The elections were postponed to Tuesday and by the time of going to press results were unknown.
