Street lights burn 24 hours a day

While the power utility Eskom often called on residents and businesses to save electricity, street lights at Adam's Farm have been left burning brightly 24 hours a day for the past two weeks.

Several residents are saying that they do not understand why the street lamps in their neighbourhoods must remain shining during the day.

“It is irresponsible of the municipality to leave these lights on for weeks. Especially during this time when Eskom is doing its best to keep the power on. Who is going to foot the bill ?,” asked one concerned resident.

Municipal spokesperson Neville Ndlala said the farm is still under the contractor. “Whatever goes on there is the contractor’s responsibility” said Ndlala.

He added that the municipality connected electricity to the area to prevent cable theft. He insisted that taxpayers will not have to foot the bill.

At the time of going to press, Ndlala claimed that municipal workers have switched off the lights and they will use the technology to control the lights.

Meanwhile, at the Mopani Disaster Centre, a big bright light is on 24 hours a day. Attempts to get a comment from the district municipality proved fruitless.
