HOEDSPRUIT: Hlokomela celebrates Nompilo day
Holkomela recognized the efforts of 94 Nompilos on April 28 at Swadini Forever Resorts just outside Hoedspruit.
Nompilos are individuals who provide home based care and health care to farm workers and lodge staff, they are peer motivators and educators who educate fellow farm workers about behavioral change.
“Our funder for the Ripfumelo project, International Organization for Migration, is closing and we celebrated the success of the project in style, and each Nompilo received a special trophy and certificate for their contribution to the project,” stated Christine Du Preez, Director of Hlokomela.
Patrick Cockayne, presented the findings of his research conducted at Hlokomela in 2009. We gained valuable insight into our own organisation and renewed hope for the future.
The purpose of the awards day is to motivate and recognise the hardworking Nompilos and also to remember the people who have lost their lives to HIV and AIDS, by lighting white and red candles.
This day was also to help encourage sex workers to test for HIV and to inform their supervisors at work so they won’t have problems to get permits to collect their medication.
