It is alleged that the fire started from the newly built kitchen at the University’s female residence at around 21:00.

Jonas Nhlane, Control Officer at the University, told the Herald that the supervisor was alerted of the fire by a resident of the campus.

“When the supervisor got there he found that students were already at the scene and were already trying to extinguish the fire. I am glad that there were no injuries,” Nhlane said.

“Students were afraid to come out of their rooms because they thought the whole building was on fire. Everybody just ran for cover and that is what caused the chaos.”

“There was smoke everywhere and we thought the whole building is under fire. I am glad that it was only the kitchen,” one of the students residing in the resident told the Herald.

No fatalities were reported.
