GIYANI: Illegal ‘yellow bone’ creams destroyed

Vendor stalls in Giyani were raided and banned skin enlightening products worth over R100 000 confiscated last week.

The raid was conducted by the Environmental Health Practitioners of Mopani District Municipality in partnership with members of the South African Police Service.

The products are very dangerous, and could cause irreparable damage to the skin

Municipal health service officer, Thelma Mlambo said the sale of skin lightening products was banned from 1991 but some hawkers and shop owners are still selling these dangerous products to the community.

Mlambo said the Environmental Health Section of Mopani District Municipality is conducting campaigns to educate members of the community about the dangers of using the banned products.

“The products are very dangerous, and could cause irreparable damage to the skin,” she warned.

She added that they have confiscated 34 types of banned skin enlightening products which were safely disposed of at Tzaneen Landfill site.

She further warned those who are selling the banned products in other areas of Mopani District that they are coming for them.
