Legal or illegal number plates?

“Most of our customers don’t want the SABS approved number plates, they insist in buying the non compliant plates because they believe it looks good...,"

Local Number plate Embosser, Leon Steenkamp has been making number plates for the community of Tzaneen for the past 40 years and says he loves every minute of it.

Steenkamp, a Director at Wally’s Agencies situated at Tzaneen Crossing Mall, urges vehicle owners to know the different kinds of number plates available on the market. He is concerned about the increasing number of customers who choose or prefer to purchase non South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) compliant number plates.

“Most of our customers don’t want the SABS approved number plates, they insist in buying the non compliant plates because they believe it looks good,” explained Steenkamp.

“The legal number plates can be distinguished by three things; a black-line on the edges of the signage, big numbers and has an SABS approved mark on it .  It is the customers’ responsibility to know if they are buying an SABS approved or non SABS approved products, I make signs and if I warn a client not to buy the wrong number plate, but they insist, I give them what they want,” added Steenkamp.

He also added that there is no one or any official who must tell people where to buy or not buy their number plates from as it promotes irregularities.
