Nkowankowa Community Games a thrilling affair

It was another exhilarating Nkowankowa Community Games in which it was a replay of the 2017 soccer finals where Dream Team defended their title by beating Rich Gang during penalties after a two all draw. 

The annual games which are held on every December 27th at the Nkowankowa Stadium keeps on improving yearly as the 2018 event had a bigger crowd and the level of competition between the teams grew.

The one day event consisted of the following sporting codes; netball, volleyball and soccer.

This year’s occasion kickstarted with a fun walk which was led by the multi talented and Fitness Coach, Nyiko Masango (Mr Dynamics) in preparation of the games.

In the Netball category the Nkowankowa City Remblers where named the winners followed by last year’s title holders, Nkowankowa Shining Stars.

The beautiful Jaqueline Mthembi was named Netball Player of the Tournament, Penny Ngobeni took the Best Goal Shooter of the Tournament and Ntsentselelo Skhetana was named Best Defender.

The games were established 10 years ago by Vuvekisi Africa Holdings, a property investment company which is owned by four local friends who saw the need to give back to the community through sports.

The founders of the games are Kiekie Mboweni, Xipetso Nhlangwana, Mandla Mushwana and Xigwili Mapimele.

Meanwhile in soccer, David Mathebula former Kaizer Chiefs star was named Player of the Tournament.

During the draw Akani Baloyi received an Award for his contributions in the games and Malombo Mbhalati received the Chairman’s Award.

The giving back doesn’t only end at the games but the organisation also donate school uniforms to needy learners around Tzaneen and soon they will be handing over uniforms to identified needy pupils.

“We call on more people to partake in the donation initiative and with regards to the games we welcome any helpful inputs and partnerships,”explained Kiekie Mboweni, one of the organisers.

The games were sponsored by local businesses and other local businesses were given an opportunity to sell their products at the stadium.

The crowd were entertained by soccer commentators Mixo Kubayi and Happy Mathye who kept the audience in stiches through their jokes and commentating style.

“The event was a success and once more we would like to thank all the sponsors, the community of Nkowankowa for the support and once more we say let’s all work together in uplifting our community” Mboweni added.
