Leader going the extra mile for her people

Her efforts saw the restoration of the dignity to a number of families within the Mopani district.

She is a leader who goes beyond the call of duty to help the poor.

The former Executive Mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Nkakareng Rakgoale’s spoke to Matome Maila, explaining that her duty was to oversee the municipality, whose core mandate is to provide water to communities.

She also made sure the poor had roofs over their heads and something to eat. Although the building of houses and the provision of food parcels fell outside the mandate of the district municipality, she went around asking for donations from business people.

On the day she resigned as the executive mayor to take up new responsibilities at a provincial level, Rakgoale handed over three newly built houses to needy families in Mahupye, Balloon and Leolo villages in Maruleng and Greater Tzaneen respectively.

Amongst the many beneficiaries of Rakgoale’s philanthropic work was a 70 year-old Kopo Shai of Mahupye who stayed in a mud house for many years.

The 26 member child headed Sithole family at Mageva Village, which was staying in a dilapidated house, are now owners of a three bedroom house, courtesy of Rakgoale.

The children were sharing two roomed mud house.

Rakgoale learnt about the plight of the family through a Community Development Worker and acted swiftly.

Food parcels handed to families that were unable to make ends meet.

Her efforts saw the restoration of the dignity of Khazamula Makamu and his family who were provided with an ablution facility.

“I could’t fold my arms and watch while people are suffering just because the building of houses is not the competency of the municipality. I had to do something to improve their situation,” said Rakgoale.

Rakgoale’s philanthropic work in Mopani communities has not gone by unnoticed, she was appointed the MEC for Social Development after the general elections in May.
