After months of inactive weather over most of South Africa, especially the summer rainfall areas, there are some changes on the way, Weather SA reports.

Cooler temperatures as well as showers and thundershowers, are expected over the south-eastern and eastern parts of the country on Thursday and Friday.

“A cold front has passed over the southern parts of the country on Wednesday and is closely followed by a ridge of high pressure, which is causing an on-shore flow, resulting in cloudy and rainy conditions,” Ezekiel Sebego from WeatherSA said.

The combination of the upper trough and the surface high will result in increased chances of rain over the eastern half of the Eastern Cape as well as KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday 5 September.

“There are expectations of significant falls of rain along the country’s eastern belt, with the possibility of heavy rain in places along the Eastern Cape’s eastern portion of the coast, as well as the southern KwaZulu-Natal coast. These will result in isolated cases of flash flooding.Isolated thundershowers are also expected over the Free State and Mpumalanga provinces. There is also a chance of a few showers over Gauteng during late Thursday or early Friday morning. Further thundershowers can be expected on Friday over KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Mpumalanga,” Sebogo said.

Cold conditions are expected over the southern and south-eastern parts on Thursday spreading north-eastwards and reaching Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces on Friday.

Light snowfalls are expected over the southern Drakensberg from tonight.
