4 life terms for men who killed Phalaborwa motorist

A violent crime spree that began in Majeje has ended with three men receiving four life sentences and 145 years' imprisonment in the Polokwane High Court.

PHALABORWA – Three men have been sentenced to a combined four life terms and an additional 145 years’ imprisonment for a violent crime spree that began in Majeje village, Phalaborwa, in which a motorist who had offered them a lift was killed.

The Polokwane High Court sentenced Justice Ngobeni (32), Mohale Chris Ngobeni (30) and Joel Mawasha (33) to the lengthy prison terms, while their co-accused, Moilakgomo Tebogo Mohale (28), was sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment for three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The court heard that on October 10, 2023, the men hijacked a motorist who had offered them a lift in Majeje village.

They allegedly used the hijacked vehicle to target other unsuspecting victims, committing further violent crimes and withdrawing money using victims’ bank cards.

Their crime spree came to an end after police traced the stolen vehicle. The accused were arrested following a chase during which they fired shots at police officers.

The three men were convicted of multiple offences, including seven counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two counts of kidnapping, murder, rape and attempted murder.

Their convictions also included unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, two counts of malicious damage to property, possession of stolen property, money laundering, and the acquisition, possession or use of the proceeds of unlawful activities.

All four accused had pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were also declared unfit to possess firearms.

During arguments in aggravation of sentence, State Adv George Makhudu presented a victim impact statement compiled by court preparation officer Morongwe Moifo, outlining the devastating consequences of the crimes for the family of the deceased, David Refilwe Katjedi.

Makhudu argued that the accused had killed a Good Samaritan who had offered them a lift, depriving his family of its primary breadwinner.

He further submitted that the accused had shown no remorse and that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify departing from the prescribed minimum sentences.

Limpopo Public Prosecutions Adv Ivy Thenga welcomed the sentences, saying they sent a strong message to those involved in violent and organised crime.

“These sentences send a strong message that those who commit violent and organised crimes will be prosecuted vigorously,” she said.

Thenga commended Makhudu, the prosecution team and law enforcement partners for their role in ensuring that those responsible were brought to justice.
