Municipal services grind to a halt

Municipal services in Tzaneen have grinded to a halt after the municipal workers downed tools on Tuesday in protest against what they say is unfair treatment of workers by the municipal manager and the rampant corruption at the institution.

Municipal offices and the streets are littered with rubbish as the strike enters the second day on Wednesday.

The local chairperson of South African Municipal workers Union (SAMWU) which represent the majority of the striking workers, Moses Malatji said the strike will continue until the management adhere to the union’s demands.

The workers are demanding the immediate resignation of the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, the immediate reinstatement of the encashment of leave days and other benefits such as car and housing allowances for some workers they claim were stopped by Matlala.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala said that conceding to the demand of SAMWU, particularly the encashment of leave days by workers will be in breach of such agreement and legislation.

He said the management is committed to make real change for the betterment of the institution and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality at large.

He said that the management has secured interdict against the ill conduct of the SAMWU strikers. The follows the burning of tyres and littering in front of municipal offices.
