PHALABORWA – In a field traditionally dominated by men, Tinyiko Mashudu Malesa from Mopani TVET College has broken barriers after being crowned the top diesel mechanic artisan at the South African National Artisan Awards (SANAA).

Five artisans from the college were recognised at the awards ceremony held in Gauteng on Saturday, September 5.

“I feel so proud. Being a female in the diesel mechanic field can feel lonely. You must work twice as hard to prove that you can do heavy-duty work. This award heals all those days I was doubted,” said Malesa.

She credited her father, Reckon Malesa, for instilling in her the importance of hard work regardless of gender.

Malesa said that while growing up, she admired people working in the mining industry and always wanted a career that would allow her to work with her hands. This inspired her decision to pursue engineering.

Malesa won a R20 000 voucher, trophy, and certificate for achieving first place in her category.

Pipe fitter Maluleke also takes top honours

Meanwhile, Marvin Maluleke also secured first place in the pipe fitter category and received the same prizes.

“My journey as an artisan has not been easy. It took years of studying, doing my NCV levels, practical training, going to the workplace at Lepelle Northern Water, dealing with breakdowns at the plant and never giving up on my trade,” he said.

Maluleke also expressed appreciation to his family, mentors and colleagues for their support, as well as the Department of Higher Education and Training for providing a platform that motivates young people to pursue artisan careers.

More Mopani artisans recognised

Other artisans from the college also performed well, with Craven Moshwana securing third place in diesel mechanics, Charlie Mabunda achieving second in pipe fitting, and Curl Mthombeni taking third place in plumbing.

The college said its artisans were among 34 artisans who participated in the national awards and have now been recognised as national artisan ambassadors.

The college also expressed its appreciation to its industry partners for providing workplace placements and training opportunities that have contributed to the development of its artisans.
