Phonikz releases debut single

After years of working with prominent South African musicians, Thato ‘Phonikz’ Modika, released his debut single ‘overwhelming’ recently.

The 24-year-old music producer and session musician told the Herald that he felt it was the right time for him to do his own thing.

On the current single he has worked with fellow Tzaneener, Rumbi on vocals and Mthokozisi on the keyboard.

The genre of his music is an amalgamation of gospel, jazz, hip-hop and soul influences.

He started his music journey at the tender age of ten and three years later he started to do music production.

He became a professional artist after passing Grade 12 at King’s Court School in Modjadjiskloof at the age of 19.

He studied music at the University of South Africa for a year, but ended up studying film at the Tshwane University of Technology.

In his third year of his studies, he was offered a job with Showtime, an Australian company.

“I toured with the company in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

“In 2020 I returned and finished my film, television and production qualification,” he said.

He has played guitar in Amanda Black’s ‘Power’ album and also produced her song ‘khumbula’.

He also performs with Blaq Diamond and Elaine, just to name a few.

His song is available on all online music platforms such as YouTube, Itunes, Deezer and Spotify.
