Common robberies increase in Giyani

Giyani saw an increase in common robberies according to the 2023 January to March crime statistics that was recently released by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele.

The statistics show that common robberies increased with 250% when compared to the same period in 2022. The number of cases in the three-month period rose from six to 21 incidents reported. Rape in the Giyani area decreased by 16,7%, from 42 to 35 cases. Sexual assaults remained the same with four reported cases. The country as a whole documented 10 512 cases of rape, a decrease of 2,8% from 10 818 in 2022.

Stock theft in Giyani increased significantly from 16 cases to 26 cases in 2023. The statistics show that robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 11,5%, from 52 cases in 2022 to 58 cases in 2023. The local police station had a decrease of 33,3% in murders from six cases in 2022 to four cases in 2023. Nationwide a total of 6 289 murders were recorded, 206 more culminating in a 3,4% increase.

“This is the lowest single-digit decrease recorded, compared to the previous three quarters. Though it is a decrease, these are not just figures but human lives that should be protected at all costs,” said Cele. “This is why these figures prompt us as the police to double up policing efforts to decrease contact crimes. 6 289 people were killed between January and March this year.

The majority of the killings took place in Kwa ZuluNatal, Western Cape and Gauteng with arguments, vigilantism and robberies topping the motive list for murder,” said Cele. Giyani recorded six cases of attempted murder; a 20% increase compared to the five cases also reported in 2022.

Police intervention was also responsible for the increase in cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It increased by 150% from two to five incidences in 2023. Carjacking cases increased by 133,3% from three cases in 2022 to seven cases in 2023.
