Fire claims life of 7-year-old in Giyani
Mopani District Municipality’s (MDM) executive mayor, Pule Shayi has sent a message of condolence to a family who lost their 7-year-old child during a house fire on Monday, September 12 at Xikukwani village outside Giyani in the early hours of the morning.

It was reported that the house caught fire with four occupants inside. The fire claimed the life of the 7-year-old child while the other three occupants managed to escape. They sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care in the hospital. In another incident, three children and a mother sustained injuries in Makgakgapatse village outside Giyani when their house also caught fire.

The cause of the fire is unconfirmed at this stage, but a team from MDM and the local municipality has started an assessment. The MMC for Local Economic Development, Nyiko Baloyi led a delegation of government officials that visited the family on Monday afternoon. The delegation included officials from Disaster Management as well as Social Development.
Shayi expressed his condolences to the family, saying “on behalf of the leadership in Mopani and everyone in the district, I send our condolences to the Khosa family. Our hearts are with them, and we further wish a speedy recovery to those injured. The assessment report from the team will help guide us on what sort of support we can offer to the two families.”
