Careers in agricultural sector in the spotlight

Agricultural giant, Westfalia Fruit Estate hosted a two-day career event at their Faerie Glen farm recently.

The aim of the occasion at the Westfalia Fruit Estate was to showcase the diverse career opportunities available in the agricultural industry. Grade 12 learners from ten schools in the Mopani district attended the sessions each day. A total of twenty schools and about 1200 learners took part in the event.

“We believe that it is important to equip learners with the knowledge and information necessary to
make informed career choices,” explained Bomikazi Molopo, corporate communications specialist
at Westfalia. Employees from Westfalia and its sister company, Hans Merensky Holdings, gave talks
on what their jobs and duties entail, ranging from farm management, nursing, research, and plant
pathology, among others.

Katlego Ragolane of Ragolane Attorneys gave a talk on the various fields of study and opportunities
in law. Other professionals also enlightened the learners on opportunities for study. Letaba TVET
and Vhembe TVET, two institutions that offer agricultural studies, shared gave prospective students insight into the criteria to apply and assisted with making good career choices.

Learners participated in a question and-answer session and were awarded prizes for answering correctly. Sewela Matlou from Mohumi Secondary School told the Herald that she learned a lot about agriculture and that she was unaware that there were that many opportunities to pursue.
“We are confident that the exhibition inspired learners to see agriculture as a viable career choice and to consider the various opportunities available in this sector.

Thank you to all who made this event a success, and we look forward to hosting more events in the future,” Molapo stated. All learners received a lunch and a gift pack.
