TZANEEN – Defending Champ of Champions titleholder Zane Fanie once again proved why he is regarded as one of Limpopo’s finest bowlers after successfully retaining his title at the Champ of Champions tournament held in Polokwane on August 1-2.

Another milestone in a remarkable run

The victory marks another significant milestone in an already impressive run for Fanie, who swept three major honours last year by winning the singles championship, the Champ of Champions title and the prestigious Masters championship.

Now, just two weeks after defending one of those titles, he is preparing to once again put his Masters crown on the line.

Fundamentals paid off, says Fanie

Reflecting on his latest success, Fanie said his preparation was centred on the fundamentals of the game.

“I prepared for the Champ of Champions by spending time playing singles on my own. I focused on two very important aspects, the weight and the grass. Those are the small details that can make a big difference during a match,” he said.

Rather than looking too far ahead in the tournament, Fanie said he treated every match as an individual challenge.

“I approached every game as a unique game. Before you reach the Champ of Champions final, you still have to win several tough matches, so I never allowed myself to think too far ahead. Every opponent deserved respect, and every match required full concentration. That mindset helped me stay focused throughout the competition.”

New role as Limpopo Bowls president

Away from competition, Fanie has taken on a leadership role after being named president of Limpopo Bowls.

“My goal is to strengthen the competitive side of bowls in Limpopo while also helping clubs improve their knowledge of the game. Education is very important, not only in terms of playing bowls but also understanding the conduct, rules and etiquette of the sport. If we can develop stronger, more knowledgeable clubs, we will also produce stronger players and ensure the game continues to grow.”

Tzaneen bowlers shine on the big stage

The Champ of Champions tournament drew many of the province’s top bowlers, who delivered high-quality performances over the two-day event.

Tzaneen Bowls Club’s Tjokkie von Straate stood out, reaching day two before securing bronze with a third-place finish overall. Fellow Tzaneen representatives Stoffel Vermaak, Yolandie de Kock and Terry Morgan also performed well against strong opposition.

Lyn Lambert of Polokwane Bowls Club claimed the ladies’ title, while Fanie successfully retained the men’s crown to continue his remarkable run of success.
