Freddy once again is Limpopo sprint champion

Freddy Rikhotso is officially the fastest 71-year-old in Limpopo.

Rikhotso won the 200m race in the 70-and-above category during the 2023 Limpopo Golden Games at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane last Wednesday. The saying that ‘some things get better with age’ is proving to be true for Rikhotso as he improves with every race. He won the race by breaking his own record of 28:08 seconds and improving by 01:91 seconds from the 29:99 seconds that he got in September during the district edition of the games at the Nkowakowa Stadium.

He will be representing Limpopo in the national games which will take place in Mpumalanga next month. He told the Herald that he wishes to become the South African champion. In 2019 in Port Elizabeth, he was crowned the South African champion in the age category 60-69 with a time of 33:06 seconds. “My motto is ‘keep on improving’. I’m currently training hard with my coach, Gladstone Shabangu, and so far, our new approach seems to be bearing fruits.

“I’m physically and mentally ready for the national games.” Rikhotso also told the Herald that running keeps him free from ailments; he never gets sick and does not take any medication. The Golden Games promotes healthy living among senior citizens from local to the national level.
