ANC members dead after bus veers down embankment

The deceased were among party members from the ANC Molemole Sub Region, who were being transported to the party's 112th celebration in Mbombela.

ANC Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane earlier confirmed, and sent the party’s condolences to the families of the five members who died in a bus crash on the R71 in Magoebaskloof earlier this morning.

The deceased were among ANC members from the Molemole sub-region in the Capricorn district, who were being transported in three buses to the party’s 112th celebrations which are being hosted at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga today.

According to the Limpopo Department of Transport, preliminary reports indicate that the incident happened when one of the buses was struck from behind and left the road, and veered 20m down an embankment.

The passengers have all been admitted to different hospitals. Although the exact number of fatalities is yet to be confirmed, reports suggest that five people died in the incident.

Motorists in the area are advised to use the George’s Valley Road when travelling in and out of Tzaneen, or to Polokwane.
