Academics build an educational App to help high school learners in Phalaborwa

Academic Peter Mamba lives by the motto that ‘charity begins at home’.

Mamba is a 25-year-old biology graduate and is currently pursuing a degree in education at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). His non-profit organisation, Peter Mamba Research Academy, is developing an app to help high school learners from his hometown with academic and emotional challenges. “As a student based in Johannesburg, I’m frequently asked to help, hence the idea of creating an app came up.”

He is assisted by friends Dr Emmanuel Mabunda and Moses Rabogale who attended Relobogile and Vuxeni high schools. They are also working with Ntsako Tibane, Dr Yusuf Feltmann, and Prof David Robinson, all lecturers and researchers at UJ. Mamba told the Herald that Relobogile and Vuxeni need great leaders such as former principals, Vince Mathe and David Ndlozi. He says the challenges at his former school have made him realise that his passion is education.

“After qualifying, I want to return home to teach.” The team developing the app uses their own money and is R10 000 short to complete the project. Anyone who can assist them, can contact Mamba at 066 078 8597.
