Rural health campaign helps to clear operation backlog

Thirty-eight specialists were deployed for a week at hospitals in the Mopani district in the Rural Health Matters campaign.

The campaign started on Monday, March 11 at health institutions such as Letaba Hospital and Dr CN Phathudi Hospital among others. Letaba Hospital was especially busy with operations done by renowned specialists from across the country. A team of four pediatric surgeons completed operations on children who have been on a waiting list for a while.

Other specialists included a team of orthopedic surgeons, while ear, nose and throat specialists operated on 28 children for tonsillectomies. They can now breath, eat and sleep well without complications. About 70 patients were booked for CT scans and others were booked for ultrasound and sonogram screenings.

At Dr C.N Phathudi Hospital a team of eight maxillofacial specialists successfully performed dental operations and removed facial tumours. Dr Mikia Ramothwala, clinical manager of Letaba Hospital, said the campaign was crucial because many of the patients would have waited for months to have the procedures done, but through the programme, it was done in a week.
