Mopani hunters show off their skills at competition

The Mopani branch of SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association hosted a Limpopo regional president and inter-branch team competition and a Limpopo regional juniors’ competition in Phalaborwa recently.

Seven teams competed for the top honours on May 18 with a total of four teams from the Mopani branch and three teams from the Bosbok branch in Burgersfort participating. The Mopani Dagha Boyz team consisting of Tyrone Cass, Deon Nieuwoudt, Thinus Jansen van Vuuren and Jaco Swart came second with Mopani Bakkiejagters consisting of Gavin Meredith, Heila Meredith, Rudolf Jankowitz and Otto Van der Star in fourth place.

Heila Meredith from the Mopani branch came second in the women’s class. Mopani Dagha Boyz scored a total of 2030.27 points raking in 970.12 points for plains and 1060.15 points for bushveld. The juniors competed in u/13 and u/16 PCP air rifle and rimfire exercises. “We are very proud of our juniors and would like to invite more junior hunters and shooters to show their skills at SA Hunters Mopani branch,” says Tyrone Cass, chairperson of the Mopani branch.

The u/13 junior shoot with Niel Helberg taking first place with a score of 139.03. Nichardt Blignaut-Kellermann secured second place scoring 130 points. Vaun Jansen van Rensburg took third place in the competition scoring 129.01 points. Juandré Deysel, Alexis Troskie and Daniel Smith rounded also participated and scored 128, 127, and 126 points respectively. In the u/13 junior rimfire shoot Alexis Troskie took first place with 123 points.

Vaun Janse van Rensburg took second place overall and Daniel Smith took third place. Three junior shooters competed in the u/16 rimfire and PCP air rifle competitions. Duncan Smith won the rimfire shoot with 134 points with Cailey Helberg in second place and Dariin Kellerman in third place. In the PCP air rifle competition Cailey Helberg took first place with 133 points followed by Duncan Smith in second place and Dariin Kellerman in third place.
