Tarzan (69) concludes his Comrades journey by running with his three children

Avid runner, Tarzan Mushwana (69) from Burgersdorp village has run his last Comrades race in style.

Four of his children joined him in his 22nd Comrades on June 9, which he says is his final race as he is getting older and needs to be kinder to his body. He finished his race in a time of 11:53:34, the slowest since he started taking part in the Comrades in 2000. His best Comrades time was in 2019 when finished with a time of 08:26:37.

His children also managed to finish their races without complications. Jamela and Dumisani finished the race together in a time of 11:51:15, while Webster completed his race an hour earlier with 10:54:21 on the clock and Eunite in a time of 10:37:54. Tarzan says it gave him great pleasure to have his children follow in his footsteps, only one of his five children from one of his two wives, Fanisa, did not take on the race.

“It warms my heart that my children also love to run.” He started running while at Gavaza Primary School. He is a retired teacher and a father of 10 children from two wives. Although he says it was his final big race, he will still take part in 42km and 21km races, as running flows in his veins. “Running has great health benefits, I have never been admitted to a hospital, because of sicknesses, I only had a bit of flu during Covid-19 times, but that is about it.

“My advice to both young and old, is to start hitting the road running, take an early morning jog, it will benefit your health in great ways,” he concluded.
