Schools outside Hoedspruit learn about sustainable eco-gardens

Eco Children establishes eco-gardens in adopted schools, providing fresh produce and teaching valuable skills in agriculture and environmental sustainability.

LIMPOPO – By establishing eco-gardens at their adopted schools, Eco Children is hoping to address the impact of hunger on education.”Across the globe, hunger remains a significant obstacle to learning.

“It can manifest in various ways, from causing behavioural issues that hinder a child’s ability to concentrate to weakening their immune system. This makes them more susceptible to illnesses and consequently affecting their school attendance,” says Zelda de Keijzer, CEO of Eco Children. By establishing eco-gardens in our adopted schools, we have not only provided a sustainable source of fresh produce but also imparted valuable knowledge to the learners.”

She says the gardens, comprising a variety of vegetables, are maintained by the learners themselves, teaching them essential skills in agriculture and environmental sustainability.

“Through this hands-on experience, children learn the importance of self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship. They understand the effort required to cultivate and nurture the land, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment and their community,” she concludes.
