Limpopo ‘Prophet of Doom’ appears in court

Mothupi Tau, 'Prophet of Doom,' faces murder, rape charges in Polokwane High Court for allegedly killing two women and injuring a child in Jane Furse.

LIMPOPO – A 35-year-old man from Jane Furse, Mothupi Tau, known as ‘Prophet of Doom’ made a second appearance before the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 28 on two counts of murder and rape in The Oaks. His first appearance was on January 9.

The court case was then postponed to Monday, November 4 for indictment and transferred to Polokwane High Court.

The crimes were committed during the early hours of December 30, around midnight. According to information, the police were notified of the murder by the Willows Clinic. Upon arrival, they found a 37-year-old woman with stab wounds to her neck. Before the victim passed away, she told her sister that she and her daughter were stabbed by Tau.

“The daughter of the deceased (20) was found in the lounge half naked with a stab wound to the neck with signs of being raped. She was also certified dead. Upon searching the house, the 5-year-old younger brother was found tied-up with tape in his room,” said Brig Hlulani Mashaba, provincial spokesperson. A preliminary investigation was conducted, resulting in the suspect being traced to his girlfriend’s house in The Oaks. He was not at the said address but was tracked to a hitchhiking spot along the road. He was arrested and detained at the Hoedspruit Police Station,” he said.

Maruleng Local Municipality Mayor Tsheko Musolwa also attended the court proceedings.

He said that the law must take its course. “Community members must rally behind the Malepe family until justice is served. We promised the family that we would be with them until the suspect is sentenced. We are here today to see how the court proceedings go. As we have heard from the court, this case is too serious for the local court and is being transferred to the Polokwane High Court,” he said.
