DA calls for removal of Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor

The DA demands the removal of Ba-Phalaborwa Muni Mayor, alleging interference in a rape case involving a Municipal employee.

LIMPOPO – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has called for the removal of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor Merriam Malatji amid allegations of her involvement in interfering with a rape case.

In a statement, the DA accused Malatji and municipal executive committee member Cllr Thompson Nkuna of attempting to mediate when an intern filed a rape charge against a senior manager at the municipality at the Namakgale Police Station.

A leaked voice recording, provided to the Herald by the DA, allegedly supports the accusations.

Although the Herald could not independently verify the recording’s authenticity, it contains troubling claims.

In the recording, Nkuna is reportedly heard stating they were sent as messengers by the family of the accused to request the victim’s family to engage in discussions. Malatji is allegedly heard asking for forgiveness on behalf of the accused’s family and suggesting the possibility of paying damages.

The victim, however, rejected the suggestion.

“Mayor, I was not expecting this from you. I’m disappointed because I saw you as a mother figure,” she said in the recording. She also asked that no further attempts be made to contact her family.

When reached for comment, municipal spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu and Ndlozi Nkanyani, manager in the office of the mayor, both declined to comment on the matter.

According to the DA, the case has since been closed following the death of the accused. At the time of print, the Herald was awaiting confirmation from Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng on the status of the case.

The victim’s identity is protected because it’s a sexual offence.
