TZANEEN – Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has visited the site of a significant roadside collapse along the R71 near Magoebaskloof, a critical route connecting Polokwane to Tzaneen and Magoebaskloof.

The damage, attributed to recent heavy rains, has exacerbated safety concerns on what is already regarded as a hazardous stretch of road.

“This road has always been dangerous. Even without disasters, we have lost lives here,” said Dr Ramathuba. “As the provincial government, we want to urge our residents to prioritise their safety.”

During her visit, Premier Mathabatha inspected the damage and engaged with engineers and officials to assess the scope of the issue and determine immediate and long-term interventions.

Speaking on-site, Dr Ramathuba revealed that MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene, has engaged the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL). The agency has committed to assessing and addressing the structural collapse.

The premier also stressed that trucks are prohibited on the R71 due to the high risks associated with the damaged road.

The Department of Transport will enforce these restrictions strictly, and truck drivers violating the prohibition will face accountability measures.

She also advised motorists to avoid travelling on the route at night, as further collapses in other areas cannot be ruled out.

While long-term fixes are being planned, the premier highlighted the importance of interim safety measures, urging the public to exercise caution and adhere to travel advisories.
