Tzaneen surgeon recovering after puff adder bite

Dr Alex Revelas is recovering at home after an encounter with a puff adder on his farm left him in intensive care.

TZANEEN – Dr Alex Revelas, a well-known orthopaedic surgeon from Tzaneen was discharged from hospital on Sunday and is recovering at his home.

He was hospitalised for a week and received treatment after he was bitten by a puff adder on his farm near Thabazimbi on January 25.

He was rushed to Thabazimbi Mediclinic where he was treated with antivenom and was airlifted to Kloof Hospital in Pretoria and was admitted to the intensive care unit.

“We are thankful to have him back home and grateful for all the prayers and messages of support. The antivenom serum worked and he received hyperbaric oxygen treatment for five days to treat the wound and complications from the snakebite,” says his wife, Laura.

She says that there is a long recovery ahead and that he will not be able to practice medicine or perform surgery over the next week or two while he is healing.

In the meantime, patient appointments at his practice in Tzaneen are postponed until he is healthy and fit again.
