Phalaborwa SPCA seeks support

The Phalaborwa SPCA has been left without transportation, halting their ability to assist animals and respond to emergencies.

LIMPOPO – The Phalaborwa SPCA is urgently appealing to businesses and the community to assist with a vehicle following an incident that left the animal shelter without transportation.

The shelter’s only bakkie, essential for daily operations, was involved in an incident on Friday, February 14, on the R530 road to Boelang while en route for servicing.

SPCA manager and inspector Rita Soogund told the Herald that without a vehicle, their work has come to a complete standstill. “We are unable to attend to emergencies, respond to complaints, collect animals, or reach out to the community because this was our only means of transport,” said Soogund. “We are urgently asking for a bakkie, even temporarily, while we await a repair quotation from the mechanic.”

Fortunately, the driver sustained only minor injuries. Reports indicate that the vehicle hit a pothole, causing a tyre to burst, which led to the bakkie skidding and overturning.

The R530 is notorious for its poor road conditions, with ongoing reports of potholes posing significant dangers to motorists.

The Herald has repeatedly reported on the issue, yet no long-term solution has been implemented.

Soogund noted that heavy trucks travelling to and from nearby mines further contribute to the deterioration of the road. Even when repairs are made, she said, the constant strain from large vehicles quickly undoes any improvements.

The SPCA is appealing for assistance from anyone who can provide a vehicle or temporary transport to help them continue their work. Those willing to assist can contact the shelter’s emergency number at 082 494 2147 or email inspector@spcaphalaborwa.co.za.
