Hoedspruit woman launches fundraiser for urgent surgery

Linda du Preez is raising funds for a hysterectomy after being diagnosed with a tumour and facing medical scheme delays.

LIMPOPO – A 48-year-old Hoedspruit woman who suffers from chronic abdominal pain due to a tumour has started a fundraiser to have a hysterectomy performed.

Linda du Preez was diagnosed with a myoma in February this year after feeling some abdominal pains.A myoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour that develops in or around the uterus, commonly known as a uterine fibroid or leiomyoma. These tumours are made up of smooth muscle tissue and can cause various symptoms, including heavy bleeding, pain, and pelvic pressure.

Her husband, Siegfried du Preez, has started a BackaBuddy account to raise money for her treatment.

“I was diagnosed with a myoma on my uterus. For the past few months, I suffered from abdominal pain, discomfort and fatigue. I went to my general practitioner in January, and she started me on iron treatment for the fatigue. I went back in February and March for some more iron treatment. She then recommended that I see my gynaecologist for further examination. At the gynaecologist, a sonar showed this lump on my uterus, which has been causing discomfort and abdominal pain. It was identified as a myoma,” said Linda.

She stated that they then scheduled an operation in May.

“But because we are new members at our medical scheme, the scheme does not authorise this operation. We joined in January, and the scheme has a waiting period of 12 months. Therefore, I humbly appeal to donate to my fundraiser, so that I can go for a hysterectomy operation as soon as possible. I hope that it could be done by the middle of June so that I can get back to normal day-to-day activities.”

She said the cost of a hysterectomy at Mediclinic in Nelspruit is R45 000 for a four-day and three-night stay, under normal circumstances.

For the doctor, it is R25 000, anesthetic association is R10 000, physio treatment and blood clot stockings are a little over R5 000, the stay for my husband is R5 000 for three nights and around R5 000 for encounter hidden costs. The total amount is R95 000.
