Eden Square opens after fire

Eden Square reopens after March fire, with over 10 stores trading again and residents relieved to resume local shopping.

PHALABORWA – The long wait for the reopening of Eden Square is over.

The shopping mall reopened its doors on Tuesday, June 24, after it was gutted by fire that caused extensive damage to shops on March 10.

The blaze destroyed several stores, including Exact, Pick n Pay Food and Liquor and Specsavers. Other shops sustained partial damage, mostly to the roofs. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

More than 10 stores have started operating, including:

  • Nedbank.
  • Crazy Store.
  • Clicks.
  • Pick n Pay Clothing.
  • Pep.
  • Old Mutual.
  • Capitec.
  • The Bed Shop.
  • Van Heerden Pharmacy.
  • Absa.
  • Rage.
  • Assupol.

This has brought relief to residents in the area, who have been anticipating the opening, especially due to the fact that they had to travel to neighbouring towns to do their shopping.

Sewela Malogadihlare from Namakgale told Herald that she is happy that the mall is operating again, because she had to travel to Tzaneen, and it was costly.

“However, I would like to request that the mall also brings fast food outlets, which are not available in Phalaborwa. After shopping in the mall, we want to sit-down and eat something, we don’t want to travel to another complex to get access to food,” she said.

Some of the shops that are yet to open include Pick n Pay, Spur and Foschini among others.
