Fire at Tzaneen initiation school hospitalises six initiates

Six initiates hospitalised after a fire broke out at Bordeaux Initiation School in Julesburg, MEC Makamu visits site and victims.

TZANEEN – Six initiates were admitted to Dr C.N. Phatudi Hospital after a fire broke out at the Bordeaux Initiation School in Julesburg Village, outside Tzaneen, on Tuesday evening (July 1).

According to the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), the fire occurred late at night while the initiates were asleep.

The owner of the school sustained minor injuries to his face, head, and foot while attempting to extinguish the flames.

The youngest initiate, an 8-year-old, suffered the most serious injuries. The remaining five are expected to be discharged and return to the school within a week.

COGHSTA MEC Basikopo Makamu visited the initiates in hospital this afternoon (July 2) and expressed satisfaction with their recovery. He later visited the initiation school to inspect the site, where media access was restricted.

For now, the focus remains on the well-being of the initiates and their safe return to the school.
