According to National Geographic, controlled burning is a carefully planned method of using fire to manage vegetation and reduce the risk of dangerous wildfires. This technique is important in forest and grassland regions, where dry seasons can cause grass, shrubs, and other plant material to accumulate and become highly flammable.

Before a burn is carried out, a detailed plan is set out to reduce fire risk, manage pests, or encourage new plant growth. Weather is also a deciding factor as conditions must be calm enough to prevent the fire from spreading, but dry enough to allow it to burn effectively.

A controlled burn might be used to clear out dead grass, dry branches, and thick undergrowth in open bushveld or rural landscapes. These materials can fuel runaway fires if left unmanaged. By removing this excess fuel under safe and controlled conditions, land managers help reduce the chances of an uncontrolled wildfire breaking out during windier months.

Controlled burning not only helps prevent destructive wildfires but also rejuvenates the land. Ash from burned vegetation returns nutrients to the soil, making it more fertile. With more sunlight reaching the ground and less competition from invasive species, native grasses and plants can thrive.
