SANDF, municipalities act on Hoedspruit water crisis
SANDF and local officials team up to resolve water and sewage issues at Air Force Base Hoedspruit, aiding the community.
HOEDSPRUIT – A high-level South African National Defence Force (SANDF) delegation and local government officials have joined forces to tackle the ongoing water and sewage challenges at Air Force Base Hoedspruit, which plays a vital role in providing the Hoedspruit community with water.
The intervention follows an urgent request for assistance from the commanding officer, Brig Gen Victor Tshunugwa.
In response, logistics chief Vice Adm David Mkhonto, general commanding officer Maj Gen Kekana, and facilities director Brigadier General Vuyani Mchunu visited the base to assess the situation and offer support.
They were joined by Mopani District Municipality’s municipal manager, Tshepo Mogano and his delegation, who echoed the call for immediate solutions to prevent further strain on both military operations and civilian water supply. Maruleng Local Municipality officials were also present.
Following the meeting, the SANDF logistics division committed to refurbishing existing systems and constructing a new water reservoir at the base.
Mkhonto emphasised the importance of swift action.
“Air Force Base Hoedspruit is not only essential to national defence operations, it also serves as a lifeline for the surrounding community. This cooperation is key to addressing the water crisis that affects both spheres,” he said.
The parties agreed on practical timelines to begin resolving the base’s water issues. It was noted that failure to act would have serious repercussions for nearby communities that depend on the base for water distribution, especially in times of municipal shortages.
Additional infrastructure upgrades were also discussed, including plans to refurbish the base’s living quarters, medical sickbay, and other essential facilities. These upgrades will be prioritised based on urgency, with implementation led by the Defence Works Formation, specifically the Regional Works Unit Limpopo.
Mogano welcomed the collaboration and expressed gratitude for the military’s proactive stance.
“This partnership represents a shared commitment to service delivery and development. We will do our part to ensure the base and community receive the support they need.”
Tshunugwa thanked all stakeholders for their willingness to work together, saying, “This united effort marks a turning point not only for the base but also for our relationship with local municipalities. We are confident that these interventions will make a lasting difference.”
