Phalaborwa mom rehoused after 2024 fire destroyed home

After losing her home in a fire allegedly started by her husband, a mother has received a new RDP house and fresh hope.

PHALABORWA – After facing heartbreak and homelessness when her house was allegedly burnt down by her husband in November last year, Nomvula Malope has finally found hope again.

On Monday, July 28, Malope officially moved into her brand-new RDP house in Kanana 2, Makhushane.

Malope said that this moment marked the beginning of a new chapter for her and her children.

The journey to recovery has not been easy.

Following the fire, Malope was left without a home and had to rely on the support of her church community. She stayed with her pastor, who took her and her three children in during their time of need.

BaPhalaborwa Municipality Cllr Johannes Mampuru and the ward committee member Joko Malesa worked together to get Malope on the RDP housing list, and her application was fast-tracked in order to provide her family with a safe and stable home.

“After everything I went through, the fire, the fear, not knowing where my children would sleep, this house is like a dream come true. I am truly grateful to the community, the councillor, the ward committee and everyone who supported me along the way,” said Malope.
