Former addict brings hope to Nkowankowa

After overcoming addiction, Nkowankowa father inspires youth and plans a rehab centre to help others find healing and purpose.

TZANEEN – A former drug addict from Nkowankowa, Lester Nhlangwini (44), has turned his life around and now wants to start a local rehabilitation centre for addicts.

A father of two, Nhlangwini, recently overcame a 24-year addiction and has dedicated his life to helping others avoid the same path.

From addiction to purpose

He began using drugs at the age of 20. Over the years, he became addicted to a range of drugs, including nyaope, crystal meth, mandrax, and cocaine.

After spending six months at a rehabilitation centre in Brits, Nhlangwini returned home determined to make a difference. He now visits local high schools, sharing his personal journey and encouraging learners to stay away from drugs.

“It breaks my heart to see young people who already look much older because of drugs,” he said.

Nhlangwini admits that this was his first time going to rehab. In the past, he tried to quit on his own but always relapsed.

“The difference this time was that it was voluntary. I was tired of the life I was living. I had isolated myself; I didn’t even look like myself anymore, and people didn’t want to be associated with me because of my bad reputation.”

He credits his transformation to the rehab’s Christian-based programme, which helped him rediscover his faith and purpose.

A mission to help others heal

“That’s when my life really changed. I experienced the love of God and realised He has a purpose for my life,” he said. “I also urge parents to support their children or loved ones who are addicted. My parents’ support saved my life.”

Nhlangwini is now appealing to authorities to help him secure premises to establish a local rehabilitation centre. His focus, he says, is not on confronting drug dealers but on preventing young people from turning to drugs in the first place.

Those wishing to assist or contact Nhlangwini can reach him at 079 800 7121 or via email at lesternhlang@gmail.com.
